Certificate? Who is eligible? How does the family obtain this certificate?
Who is eligible for Military
Funeral Honors?
Answer: Deceased Active Duty,
Guard and Reserve Members, Military Retirees, and Veteran's who served at
least one term of enlistment and separated under honorable conditions
are eligible for Military Funeral Honors. A DD Form 214, Discharge
certificate, the NGB-22 or other documentation is used to verify eligibility.

Are there Veteran's not eligible
for Military Funeral Honors?
Answer: Yes, Veterans discharged
under less than honorable conditions or convicted of a capital offense and sentenced
to life imprisonment or death.

How do I request Military Funeral
Honors and how much will it cost me?
Answer: Request military funeral honors through your Funeral Director. Honors
are provided at no cost.

How do I get a flag for the casket
and how much will it cost me?
Answer: Request a flag through your Funeral Director or the U.S. Post Office (if
you provide a copy of the DD Form 214, NGB-22 or discharge certificate).
Flags are provided at no cost.

What Honors are provided?
Answer: Veterans normally receive Taps, Flag Folding and Presentation at a minimum. Active Duty members and Military Retirees receive additional honors. Two or more uniformed military personnel with at least one being a member of veterans parent service of the armed forces.

What if we don't want Taps?
Answer: It is the family's option
and may be deleted from the ceremony at the family's request.

What do they say when they present
the flag?
Answer: It varies by Branch of
Service but is similar to this:
"This flag is presented on behalf of a grateful
nation, as a token of our appreciation for the honorable and faithful service
rendered by your loved one."

Who Provides Military Funeral
Honors?Doesn't protocol state:A flag is presented by someone of equal to or grater than
the deceased?
Answer: The family determines who
presents the flag and has a choice of Uniformed Service members or Veteran's
Service Organization members. Honors for Veterans are provided by the Oregon
National Guard, and/or Veteran's Service Organizations, and/or the Active
Component. Honors for Active Duty members and Military Retirees are provided
by the Active Component.

Answer: Yes, donations to the Oregon National Guard Emergency Relief

What is the Presidential Memorial
Certificate? Who is eligible? How does the family obtain this certificate?
This is a parchment certificate with a calligraphic inscription expressing
the nations grateful recognition of a honorably discharged, deceased veteran's
service in the armed forces. The veterans name is inscribed and the certificate bears the signature of the
President. Next of kin, other relatives and friends may request the certificate in
person at any VA regional office or by mail.
