On 1 January 2000, the United States Congress passed public law 106-65
and NDAA for FY 2000 that the Army National Guard will perform Veteran
funeral honors for those that have served honorably in our armed forces.
Although the Oregon Army National Guard primarily conducts funeral for Army
veterans, we are not limited to just the army and are proud to provide the
honors for any veteran.
In the past to plan a funeral for a veteran you called the nearest Casualty
Assistance Command (for Oregon this is Fort Lewis). Fort Lewis sent the
information electronically to our office and we call to tell you that we
would fill the request. As Fort Lewis manages six states and only has
limited personnel, this required several days to assign an Honors Unit.
Once a unit was assigned you received confirming honors will be provided.
Soldiers that perform the honors are part time MDAY soldiers. Due to the
length of time required for processing your request and assignment of a
unit, honors services might not have been available.
With our program you can now call to a local number for assistance. We
provide a more responsive alternative. We will also require a copy of one
of the following; a DD Form 214, NGB 22 or a Honorable Discharge
Certificate to prove the deceased was honorable discharged. To insure
availability, more than 24 hours notice is greatly appreciated. Most services request at least 48
hours in order to organize the funeral honors detail.
Our funeral honors services are proudly made available to members of all
branches of the United States Armed Forces.
